Crossing the River Prut 1941
"Soldiers,
From the very first day of the new reign and of my national combat I vowed to lead you to victory. To wipe off the dishonor blemish from the book of nation and the humiliation shadow off your forehead and epaulettes. Now is the time of the holiest battle, the battle for our forefathers' rights, and of the church, the battle for the Romanian abodes and altars of all times.
Soldiers, I order you: cross the Prut!
Crush the enemy from the East and North. Throw the red yoke of Bolshevism off our overrun brothers. Bring back to the country body the Bassarabian ancient native land and voivode forests of Bucovina, your fields and realms."
Marshall Ion Antonescu, June 22, 1941
With this order, Romania entered WWII on the side of the Axis Powers to recapture lands taken by the Soviet Union under the 1939 Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. This reluctant alliance was formed out of necessity due to the wests' inability to guarantee Romania's' borders along with the fall of France, the defeat of Great Britain on the continent and the desire of regaining lost territory. On August 23, 1944 (after 3 years of war and the defeat of Germany imminent) King Mihai I overthrew Antonescu and joined the Soviet Union/Allies to defeat its former ally with the hope of attaining co-belligerent status as that of Italy.
